The focus is on the roles that higher learning institutions (HLIs) can and have to play in the process. It is a conversation that interrogates the industrialization prospects of the fifth phase government. It traces the industrialization process from the early days of Tanzania’s independence in 1961 and various efforts undertaken in the country’s industrialization space to date. The conversation then zero-in on the potential and actual roles of HLIs in the Tanzania’s new industrialization drive by the fifth phase government. It is shown in the paper that Tanzania has made various attempts to industrialize since independence. There have been some success and failures before the fifth phase government’s new industrialization drive.
